Why I want to visit Iran (photo essay)

“Do you have a death wish?!” she said, with an appalled expression on her face. “Why would ANYONE want to visit Iran?!”

All I could think of was “why the HECK not?!”

From its extensive history to its gorgeous landscapes, there are several reasons why I want to visit Iran. Ever since the ancient nation caught my eye in elementary school, I’ve believed that a trip there would be an unforgettable one. Here’s why!

A wealth of history

Iran and the Persian Empire have made some outstanding contributions to the world. The first that comes to mind is the wisdom of one of the greatest rulers the world has seen. Cyrus the Great created not only the largest empire in history, but also composed the first historically-relevant declaration of human rights (Wikipedia).

So it is written that he repatriated displaced peoples, believed in freedom of religion, and even respected the customs and traditions of territories he conquered. Another interesting fact? At least 2 of the United States founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, kept copies of Cyrus’ biography for inspiration! I would love to visit Iran and learn more about this great ruler’s legacy firsthand.

Imposing Persian architecture

From the Imam Mosque in Isfahan to the great UNESCO Heritage Site of Persepolis, Iranian architecture is absolutely fascinating. The colorful mosaics, over-the-top domes, and use of symbolic geometry are some of the greatest the world has seen. I could spend hours photographing its intricate details!

Paradisiacal landscapes

Did you know that Iran is one of the world’s most mountainous countries? Unlike most Middle Eastern countries, Iran is not a vast desert! The variety of landscapes will wow you. From green pastures to icy mountain ranges, Iran is a nature lover’s paradise. I would love to hike by Mount Damavand, camp by the dense rain forest of Shomal, and bathe in the beaches of Kish Island.

Warm hospitality

Don’t buy the Western media lies: Iranians are some of the most welcoming people in the world. In fact, they are just as surprised of our governments’ rife! For instance, most Iranians do not even know that Americans are allowed to visit their country due to twisted media reports. So when they finally meet one, all they want is to shower them with the beauty of their culture and hospitality tradition.

The thrill of busting a myth

But the number one reason why I want to visit Iran? To shatter several myths about the demonized nation. I can’t wait to show the Western world that Iran’s history, imposing architecture, paradisiacal landscapes, and warm hospitality are the ingredients of the perfect trip of a lifetime. Best of all? With a much lower price tag than other popular destinations!
